Sunday January 30th, 2011 19:30 Porsche Unveils the 918 RSR

Porsche 918 RSR 2011

The latest offering from Porsche was formally unveiled at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The Porsche 918 RSR is a mid-engine concept car available as part of a limited production series.

The concept car is the first official plug-in hybrid automobile from Porsche. It was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2010. Known internally as Project XG10, the Porsche 918 RSR reaches 60 mph from a dead stop in less than 3.2 seconds and is capable of reaching over 200 miles per hour.

Although the bulk of the charge comes from energy via the plug-in socket, the batteries also builds up a charge through regenerative braking and any excess power output from the engine when the vehicle is coasting.

The Porsche 918 RSR uses a hybrid battery system rather than a traditional flywheel to allow significantly more power to be stored. The system allows the sport car to drive up to 15 miles before the engine kicks in.

The two door roadster packs a 3.4 litre V8 engine and a 7-speed PDK dual clutch transmission. The sport car has a lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic single shell and a frame made almost exclusively from magnesium and aluminium.

The display car shown in Detroit has a well laid-out, closed cockpit with a jet black interior. It had bold orange stripes on top of a dazzling silver paint job. It also bore the number 22 – a tribute to the winning Porsche 917 K that obliterated the competition in Le Mans 40 years ago.

Wednesday January 26th, 2011 12:24 Green Hornet’s Feature Car under the Microscope

Green Hornet Chrysler Black Beauty Car

The new movie The Green Hornet features the Chrysler Imperial nicknamed Black Beauty. Originally the writers thought they would be required to find a new car for the movie. When ideas regarding new cars were pitched none of them fit. Seth Rogan, who stars in the film, stated that the original car was cooler.

The director of The Green Hornet Michel Gondry needed convincing to cast the Chrysler Imperial. Dennis McCarthy, who was the car coordinator for the movie, purchased the classic car and altered it. He lowered it and tinted the windows; he then covered the headlights with green and added custom wheels. These adjustments were approved by the director who agreed that Black Beauty should be in the movie.

With the directors approval McCarthy was given the task of locating 28 more Imperials for the movie. Two of the cars were kept in immaculate condition including the inside of the cars. These were not used for stunts and were used for filming scenes between the actors while driving Black Beauty.

The last scene is where the cars sustained the most damage according to McCarthy. The cars were damaged stage by stage and several cars were needed to shoot the scenes correctly. The search for that many classic cars was extensive, and McCarthy travelled from San Diego to Canada to find enough.

Once the creative department had access to the finished product, the stunt team for the movie added the cool effects including machine guns, a flamethrower, and missiles. McCarthy stated that they ended up completely refurbishing 15 separate cars and there may not be enough left for a sequel.

Tuesday January 25th, 2011 15:46 There is a New Volvo in Town

Volve C-30

With Volvo recently releasing details of its all-new C-30 Coupe, some may question the state of the previous champion of this class, the Volkswagen Golf. The C-30 is Volvo’s first attempt to dethrone the Golf, the question is are they or will they be successful.

The C-30 is a real technological advancement for Volvo. The C-30 takes after its older brother the C-60. The C-60 was the first of its kind to commercially introduce revolutionary enhancements such as, City Safety. Now on the C-30, these enhancements have become even more refined. Now you might be wondering why with all of the features the C-30 brings to the table, why it doesn’t over reign the Golf? Truthfully, the Volvo C-30 is a healthy competitor, but price and fuel mileage are currently a big factor in making a vehicle decision. The C-30 sports a healthy 29 MPG, and the Golf around 31 MPG, both have a comparable rating however the Golf prevails. Next in the hatchback standoff is the price, the Volvo C-30 around £34,000, the Volkswagen Golf £30,800.

Now £3,000 pounds in a battle where both of the cars are extremely similar can be a big decision maker. Also, the some claim that the Volkswagen brand carries a more reliable name where Volvo is still only beginning in the realm of coupe hatchback vehicles. However, Volvo’s sneak attack of integrated technology could come into play in making a decision.

Even though it is likely both will have a five star safety rating, in the long haul the Volvo C-30 may in fact be a safer car. Only time will tell as Volvo releases the new hatchback. The C-30 scheduled for release in 2012 may or may not be a Volkswagen killer, but in the meantime Volkswagen may catch on to Volvo’s tricks.

Tuesday January 18th, 2011 21:57 The New Ford Focus Coupe

Ford Focus coupe 2012

Ford Focus coupe 2012

A new and dynamic Ford Focus Coupe will arrive in 2012. This Ford Focus is modelled after the Focus MK III and will take the place of the departing three-door hatch. This automobile, released by Blue Oval, is reportedly going to debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

There is a possibility that if the Ford Focus Coupe makes its way to assembly, that consumers will be able to purchase one. A source says that designers have spent much of this year exploring the concept of the Ford Focus Coupe. The Ford Focus gets its modification from the Focus ST. However, the form is stretched and widened; therefore, it is long and low. At the front of the vehicle, there is a wide grill; at the back, there is a sharp sloping screen.

This car and will sits on the expansion of the ST’s front-wheel-drive frame and will share the identical traction-boost vectoring system, yet it has a broader track to help stability. Because of a mixture of intake and exhaust tuning that offers a gentle note on small throttle openings and a noise at piercing revs, the car will emit and electrifying sound. Speculation is that the Ford Focus will use a commanding 2.0 litre Ecoboost four-cylinder engine with 247 horsepower. As a result, the car will go from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds and have a top speed of 155 mph. It will have diesel engines and lower-powered petrol. This new Ford will be a very vibrant and exhilarating vehicle.

Friday January 14th, 2011 12:30 The New VW Taxi Concept Car

Volkswagen Taxi Concept Car

There is a new VW taxi car coming to the family of up! concept cars. This VW concept car is based on London taxis and will go into production in the summer of 2011. The car is a noble idea, and is paving the way for compact, efficient models in the taxi business.

This three-seater is built to work in small spaces where traffic is a problem. The car is only 3.73 meters in length, 1.66m in width and 1.6m tall, yet can still fit the driver and two passengers comfortably. You can place luggage in the front where the passenger seat would normally go. It is also electric to be easier on the environment, which is just what taxis need! The 113bhp motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries and can go about 186 miles between charges. The VW taxi car is also pretty speedy, topping out at 74mph.

The VW concept car also has a fun look and feel to it that makes you want to hop in and go for a ride. It is the basic black and has the typical taxi sign on the roof, but has some interesting extras. On the roof are a monochrome Union Jack painted, and a London coat of arms on the doors. When you sit inside you are surrounded by a hi-tech design. The driver’s touch screen computer displays navigation and fare, and the backseat has a display that shows their route and weather conditions.

The VW taxi car is a fun, inventive concept that helps the environment and saves space. Hopefully more taxis take notice and follow their lead. It will be exciting to see the final production car on the market.

Thursday January 13th, 2011 13:21 Baby Porsche SUV – The Cajun Arriving in 2015

Porsche, the predominant German sports car manufacturer continues to expand its line-up with models that cross lines between sports and utility. The Cayenne was the first offering from the manufacturer into the area of sports activity vehicles. Keeping with the Porsche credo of building the fastest and do anything models that are available on the market, this SUV scorched the roads and yet provided off road capabilities that rivalled other trail rated models from rival companies.

The baby SUV was recently green lighted for production by management in Stuttgart and its parent company, Volkswagen. This smaller offering will be based on other models already available in the Volkswagen and Audi lineups. The German manufacturer will add its own flair and spice up the vehicle though. Preliminarily named the Cajun, this smaller SUV is different from the other models offered by its parent company. Just as the Cayenne is a radical departure from the Touareg and the Q7 the Cajun must offer more go and more off road-ability than the Q5 and the Tiguan.
Testing is currently going on to establish vehicle dynamics. The timeline for introduction of this baby SUV from Porsche is in early 2015. The company now has over four years to put together an asphalt melting, Rubicon conquering vehicle that will maintain its supremacy in the automotive world.
For many purists the expansion of the lineup to include a second utility vehicle, after the introduction of the first four door sedan, dilutes the true mission of the company. Many, however, say that in order to survive a company has to play in every market, bring on the Cajun.
